The Bombay High Court has issued a notice to the Central Government and other authorities following a petition filed by LPG distributors seeking an increase in the supply of domestic cooking gas cylinders in India.

The matter was heard by the Nagpur Bench of the High Court, where a division bench directed the concerned authorities to respond to the concerns raised by distributors regarding shortages in domestic LPG supply.

Petition Filed by LPG Distributors

The petition was filed by several LPG distributors associated with Confidence Petroleum India Limited. The distributors claim that the supply of domestic LPG cylinders has not increased despite rising demand in different parts of the country.

According to the petitioners, the shortage has been affecting households, small businesses, restaurants, and commercial establishments, particularly in parts of Maharashtra including the Vidarbha region.

Distributors claim that increasing demand and limited supply are creating serious difficulties for both consumers and local gas agencies.

Allegation of LPG Export During Domestic Shortage

One of the major concerns raised in the petition is that LPG exports are continuing while the domestic market is facing supply shortages. The distributors urged the court to ensure that LPG produced within the country should first be supplied to domestic consumers before exports are allowed.

They also requested the court to consider temporarily restricting exports until the domestic supply situation improves.

Global Factors Affecting LPG Supply

The petition also mentioned that global geopolitical tensions and disruptions in crude oil supply chains have affected LPG availability worldwide. These international factors are believed to be contributing to the shortage of LPG cylinders in India.

Court Observes Matter is Serious

During the hearing, the High Court noted that the issue is serious because LPG is an essential commodity used daily by millions of households across the country.

The court directed authorities to strictly follow existing policies that prioritize domestic supply of LPG while the case is being examined.

Next Hearing

The court has asked the Union Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), and the concerned private company to submit their responses. The matter will be heard again after the authorities file their replies.

Why This Case Matters

The outcome of this case could significantly influence LPG distribution policies in India. If the court directs stronger domestic supply measures, it may help ensure that households receive adequate LPG cylinders without facing shortages.

For millions of Indian families who depend on LPG for daily cooking, the case could play an important role in improving the stability and availability of cooking gas supply in the future.
